Candle Care 101 | How to Reuse Old Candle Wax

Candle Care 101 | How to Reuse Old Candle Wax

Have excessive candle wax from left over candles? This easy melt-and-pour method saves every last drop of your favorite Hotel Collection candle. In this DIY, you will be melting down remaining candle wax to pour into a fresh candle holder.

This works best with candle waxes of the same fragrance. However, if you feel like being daring when blending candle wax, be sure that the fragrances you choose complement one another.

Hotel Collection combinations worth exploring:

What you’ll need:

  • Leftover candle wax (To fill a 3oz votive size candle, be sure to have at least four ½ inch chunks of wax. To fill a larger container, like our 11oz and 14oz candles, be sure to have at least six to ten ½ inch chunks of wax.)
  • Cotton wicks (You can buy at most craft stores or on Amazon)
  • Clean, empty candle container
  • 2 pans (one smaller one that fits inside the larger one)
  • Wood skewers, pencils or chopsticks
  • Tape (to secure skewers, if needed)
  • Water
  • Tongs
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Stove

Steps

  1. First, melt candles in a small pan set inside a large pan of simmering water. Never leave the stove unattended. (The melting point of different waxes ranges from 100 to 145 degrees.)
  2. Once the wax is melted, be careful to remove old wicks with tongs and toss them out.
  3. Cut a piece of wicking two inches taller than the candle holder. Gently place the wick in the center of the container.
  4. Knot one end and thread through a wick tab.
  5. Tie the free end around a wooden skewer and balance vertically so it properly dries. Tape in place, if needed.
  6. Dip wicking and tab into the melted wax to coat them.
  7. Remove using tongs, then press the tab to the bottom of the holder.
  8. Rest the skewer on the container’s rim using tongs.
  9. Pour melted wax into the container, stopping a half inch below the rim.
  10. Let stand until it sets, about one hour.
  11. To even the well at the center, pour more wax into the center until it's one-fourth inch below rim.
